haven ave / 178th to 174th st / high bridge
4.45 miles
as promised, today i visited new york city’s oldest bridge. the high bridge once brought water from the catskills to manhattan, and also served as a destination, much like the brooklyn bridge now.
today, the bridge was quiet except for a couple of strollers and bikers, locals. while not quite as majestic as photos make it out to have been due to renovations, the bridge is a worthy destination. its arches are unique. from the side of the bridge closest to the bronx, you can see the empire state building and one world trade center, two buildings i have seen on perhaps one third of my walks, each time from a new angle.
high bridge park is lush and enveloping. the downhill walk is kind.
yesterday and today marked most of washington heights / little dominican republic, a semi-conscious preparation for my first theatre movie in over a year, in the heights. on the way to the high bridge, i passed the pool (previously an aqueduct) where they filmed part of the movie.
walking after work when the sidewalks are golden and the streets are just loud enough gives pleasure to this summer. the light soaked days are coming; the light soaked days are here.
